What is depression?
Depression is a common but serious mood disorder. It is also known as major depressive disorder or clinical depression. No one knows exactly what causes it and there are many different types of depression. Some people experience it after a traumatic event or a significant loss. Some people experience depression after using drugs or alcohol or experiencing conflict with a family member. Others have a family history of depression and have a genetic predisposition to depression. Many women experience depression after giving birth (Post-partum depression). What causes depression?
There are many factors that can put a person at risk for depression. If you have a family history of depression you are at a higher risk. You are also at risk if you have been through significant life stressors such as poverty, unemployment, trauma, natural disasters, or loss of a loved one.
How do I treat depression?
There are multiple ways to treat depression. Most people use a combination of psychotherapy (counseling) and medication to help manage their depression. I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to treat depression in my clients and have found this to be very effective. CBT works by changing self-defeating thoughts and behaviors which can help you to feel better about yourself and your situation.
Some people also choose to take medication for their depression. Most doctors will prescribe a Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor (SSRI). SSRIs increase the level of serotonin (a chemical related to depression) in the brain. Studies suggest that SSRIs are very effective when treating major depression. It's important to know that these medications don't start working overnight. It can take anywhere from 4-6 weeks for it to start working in the body.
